Construction of the proposed Bolgatanga Sports Stadium is expected to start before the end of 2026, Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga has said.
The announcement follows assurances from the government over the project. A team is expected to travel to the Upper East Region this month to assess the proposed site, with the visit set to precede the start of building work.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Atanga said the multi-purpose facility would support the development of sport in the region while creating jobs and encouraging private investment.
The stadium is planned to accommodate a range of sporting activities, including football, athletics, boxing, basketball, volleyball and indoor games.
Its proposed facilities include a main football pitch, a training pitch, athletics tracks, a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, jumping facilities and conference rooms.
The project is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s wider plan to improve sports infrastructure across the country. The 2026 national budget includes funding for the construction of 10 new stadia.
Atanga said the Bolgatanga facility would give young people in the region better opportunities to develop their sporting abilities. He also said it could provide employment and create opportunities for investors.
“Sporting activities today are no longer just about entertainment. They are also a source of employment and an opportunity for investors to come and invest,” he said.
The minister thanked the government for selecting the Upper East Region as one of the beneficiaries of the stadium programme.
He also called on residents to use the facility appropriately once it is completed, saying it should help develop sporting talent and support the region’s wider progress.
“When these facilities are provided, people should not use them for any other purpose apart from promoting their talents to become successful citizens who can help develop the region further,” he said.
The planned site assessment is expected to be the next significant stage in the project, ahead of construction.
Once completed, the proposed stadium is expected to strengthen sports infrastructure in the region and improve access to training facilities. It is also intended to provide emerging athletes with a platform to pursue careers in sport.
