Vincent Kompany admitted Bayern Munich were frustrated to draw 2-2 with Arsenal at Allianz Arena but said the result was ultimately fair after both sides enjoyed periods of control.
Bayern created the clearer chances and felt they had done enough to win, only for Arsenal to respond with a late equaliser. However, Kompany acknowledged the visitors’ quality and accepted that the match was never fully under his side’s control.
“We are in a period when we are playing far too many matches, so we have to move on quickly from this game and think about the next one,” Bayern manager Kompany said in comments reported by Mundo Deportivo.
“We faced a strong opponent, and we felt that and saw it clearly.”
Kompany said Bayern had produced more threatening opportunities than expected but lost momentum during the closing stages.
“I think we had good spells in the game and created some clear chances that I did not expect us to get in such numbers,” he added.
“It is disappointing that we struggled during the last 10 or 15 minutes, which caused us to lose some of our momentum.”
Bayern believed victory was within reach, but Kompany said Arsenal’s performance meant the contest remained finely balanced.
“We felt we were capable of winning, and perhaps we deserved to, but the opposition were extremely strong and the game was never settled at any point,” he said.
“The equaliser we conceded in the final minutes was unfortunate.”
The Belgian said the two teams matched each other in their pressing and attempts to progress into the attacking third. Even so, he felt Bayern reached dangerous areas more frequently.
“Arsenal pressed with the same intensity as us, and we were dangerous in those moments,” said Kompany.
“We did not always choose the right time to get into the final third, but I think we reached those areas more often than Arsenal and created danger, including two or three situations when we had a numerical advantage.”
Despite his disappointment at dropping two points, Kompany rejected the idea that Bayern had dominated the entire match.
“We faced a top-level opponent, and I would not say either team had complete control because Arsenal also had periods when they were the better side,” he said.
“The result may be fair, even though we created more clear chances.”
Kompany also praised Harry Kane, who was named player of the match after scoring one goal and setting up Alphonso Davies for Bayern’s other goal.
He said the England striker’s movement and awareness gave Bayern additional attacking options.
“Kane has a special instinct that allows him to know when to drop deeper and when to move into other areas of the pitch,” Kompany said.
“When the two centre-backs step forward to press and Harry has time on the ball, he can show his quality with accurate long passes. That helps us get beyond the defensive line and create dangerous opportunities.”
The draw leaves Bayern Munich with 5 points after three Champions League matches. Their next game is against Atletico de Madrid on 3 November.
