Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has described his three-match FIFA suspension as an “honour” after the Pharaohs’ controversial 3-2 defeat by Argentina in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 60-year-old responded defiantly to the disciplinary ruling and said he was placing the matter in God’s hands.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee also suspended Egypt team director Ibrahim Hassan, Hossam’s twin brother, for three matches. Egypt winger Mostafa Zico received a five-match ban.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed the punishments on October 19. It said it had asked FIFA to provide detailed explanations before reviewing its legal options and deciding whether to appeal.
The sanctions follow the events surrounding Egypt’s dramatic elimination from the World Cup. The Pharaohs appeared on course for a historic quarter-final place after establishing a 2-0 lead against the defending champions.
Argentina responded with a second-half comeback to win 3-2 and end Egypt’s tournament. The match featured several disputed refereeing decisions, including an Egyptian goal being disallowed and a late appeal for a penalty.
Hossam Hassan and other members of the Egyptian delegation criticised the officiating after the match. Their comments subsequently led to FIFA disciplinary proceedings.
Despite the defeat, Egypt reached the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time. Their campaign also produced the country’s first World Cup victory over New Zealand and saw them progress beyond the group stage.
The suspensions may now influence Egypt’s next international fixtures. Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan could both miss the November 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Malawi if their bans apply to those matches.
Zico’s five-match suspension is longer and is expected to rule him out for a wider part of the qualifying campaign.
