Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says applications were invited for the vacant Black Stars head coach role to restore public confidence and follow the recruitment process agreed with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
The GFA and the Ministry formed a five-member committee to oversee the appointment of a substantive coach after Carlos Queiroz left following Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana have already missed out on the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and are bottom of Group C in the current qualifying campaign. They have lost their first two matches, against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, and have no points.
The decision to advertise the position meant interested candidates could apply, rather than the authorities relying solely on headhunting or recommendations for preferred coaches.
Asante Twum said those alternatives had been considered, but public opinion also had to be taken into account as the GFA and the Ministry sought to rebuild confidence in the national team’s management.
“Every point raised is very valid. However, sometimes you also have to consider the research method you are using to find a solution, especially when you want to restore public confidence,” he told TV3.
“You are dealing with people who, in a way, are tired of a certain style or way of doing things and want you to change. All these are part of the process.”
He added that the GFA could not make the decision independently because the Ministry was involved in the recruitment process.
“Since the decision was not solely that of the FA and had to involve the Ministry, we had to agree to move in certain directions. We needed to respect that particular approach,” Asante Twum said.
The GFA has meanwhile appointed Kim Lars Bjorkegren as interim coach for Ghana’s November 2026 double-header against Somalia in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
Bjorkegren will be supported by assistants Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram for those two matches.
The association is expected to name a permanent head coach before Ghana’s final round of qualifying fixtures next year. The new manager will be tasked with leading the Black Stars’ efforts to revive their campaign.
