Ghana Football Association (GFA) communications director Henry Asante Twum says Kim Lars Bjorkegren was chosen to lead the interim Black Stars technical team because of his continuity, domestic experience and knowledge of Ghana’s national-team structure.
Bjorkegren, who is also coach of Ghana’s women’s national team, will take charge during the November 2026 international window as Ghana face Somalia in a double-header in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
His appointment has drawn attention because of his existing role with the Black Queens, but Asante Twum said the GFA followed a clear selection process.
“So, the first consideration was institutional memory and continuity. The second was to look within the Ghana Premier League.
“The third was to look at the national team structure, assess all our national teams and identify coaches handling them who had the competence and quality to join the technical team. They settled on Kim,” he told TV3.
The temporary coaching arrangement follows Ghana’s poor start in Group C, with the Black Stars losing their first two matches and remaining without a point.
Ghana began with a 2-0 defeat away to Cote d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 loss against The Gambia. The Black Stars had led by two goals in that match but were unable to hold on.
Those results were followed by the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz. The GFA has since appointed an interim team while its search committee continues its work to find a permanent successor.
Bjorkegren will be supported by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, who have been named assistant coaches. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeepers’ coach.
The group has been assembled specifically for Ghana’s two matches against Somalia in November. The arrangement is intended to give the coach search committee more time to identify a substantive head coach before the remaining qualifying fixtures next year.
Asante Twum’s explanation indicates that the GFA wanted to combine familiarity with the national setup and the Ghana Premier League with the technical expertise of coaches already working within the country’s football structure.
The Black Stars are attempting to return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the previous edition, which was hosted in Morocco. Their two opening defeats have left them needing to recover quickly in the qualifying campaign.
