Kim Lars Bjorkegren has been appointed to lead Ghana’s interim Black Stars technical team during the November 2026 international window, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) saying continuity, domestic experience and technical ability were central to its decision.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the selection process considered coaches already familiar with the organisation and Ghanaian football before settling on Bjorkegren, who currently coaches the Black Queens.
“So, the first consideration was institutional memory and continuity. The second was to look within the Ghana Premier League.
“The third was to look at the national team structure, assess all our national teams and identify coaches handling them who had the competence and quality to join the technical team. They settled on Kim,” he said on TV3’s Sports Station show.
Bjorkegren’s appointment comes as the GFA attempts to steady the Black Stars after a poor opening to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana began the campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Cote d’Ivoire before losing 4-2 to The Gambia. Those results led to the departure of Carlos Queiroz and prompted the GFA to put an interim arrangement in place while it continues the search for a permanent head coach.
The Swedish coach will be supported by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, who have been appointed assistant coaches. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda will serve as goalkeepers’ coach.
Why Bjorkegren was selected
Asante Twum said the GFA’s decision was based on three main areas: preserving institutional knowledge, considering coaches working in the Ghana Premier League and assessing technical staff already involved with Ghana’s national teams.
That approach led to the selection of Bjorkegren, despite his existing responsibility for the Black Queens. His appointment therefore gives the interim setup a coach with international experience while also maintaining links with Ghana’s national team structure.
The decision has drawn attention because Bjorkegren is already in charge of Ghana’s women’s senior team. However, the GFA has presented the arrangement as a combination of coaching experience, knowledge of the local game and continuity within the national setup.
Bjorkegren’s immediate responsibility will be the Black Stars’ November fixtures against Somalia. The temporary structure is intended to cover those matches and allow the coach search committee additional time to identify a substantive head coach.
Ghana will use the Somalia games to try to revive its qualifying campaign, while the GFA continues work on its longer-term appointment.
