The Ghana Armwrestling Federation has announced its squad for the 2026 World Armwrestling Championship in New Delhi, India, while appealing for financial support to cover the team’s travel and participation costs.
The federation is calling on corporate Ghana, government institutions, philanthropists, sports enthusiasts and other stakeholders to help ensure the selected athletes can compete at the global event.
Ghana will be represented by a group of experienced competitors, with the team aiming to win medals and strengthen the country’s reputation in international armwrestling.
Among the leading names in the women’s contingent are Mabel Yeboah – 60kg, Blessed Abeka Nunoo – 65kg and Grace Minta – 89kg. The trio have established themselves through performances at international competitions.
They will be joined by Florence Boakye – 110+kg, Afia Kumah – 110+kg and Comfort Dunyo – 60kg master.
The men’s squad consists of Edward Asamoah Yamoah, Haruna Tahiru, Godwin Sackey, Daniel Acquah, Charles Osei Asibey Jr., Henry Otoo and Asinu Dodzie.
The federation says the athletes will take Ghana’s progress in the sport onto the world stage, with the national team having continued to make an impact at both continental and global competitions.
Ghanaian armwrestlers have earned recognition for the country through their performances and have shown they can compete with leading athletes from around the world.
However, the cost of sending the team to India remains a significant challenge. The federation’s appeal is intended to prevent a lack of funding from stopping the athletes from taking part in the championship.
Support from businesses, government agencies and individuals would help meet the costs of the trip and provide the team with a stronger platform for its campaign. The federation also said such backing would give sponsors the chance to be associated with a sport that has produced results and raised Ghana’s profile internationally.
Over the years, the Ghana Armwrestling Federation has focused on developing athletes capable of competing at the highest level. Its work has also created opportunities in talent development and employment, while contributing to national pride.
The federation is hopeful that the appeal will generate enough support for the squad to travel to India and compete against the world’s best armwrestlers.
The 2026 World Armwrestling Championship will be held in India from October 26 to November 7, 2026.
