Frank Lampard says Caleb Yirenkyi has the talent to become an increasingly important player for Coventry City after the Ghanaian midfielder helped inspire victory over Plymouth.

Yirenkyi created Coventry’s opening goal with an inventive flick for Taiwo Awoniyi, providing a moment of attacking quality that caught the eye during the win. The contribution offered an early indication of the creativity the young player could bring to Lampard’s side.

Speaking to Coventry City TV, Coventry head coach Lampard said the assist demonstrated the reason the club brought Yirenkyi to the team. He believes the midfielder has significant potential and plenty of scope to improve as he continues his development.

“That’s what we brought Caleb here for. He’s a really, really talented young man. There’s so much to his game that is going to get better,” Lampard said.

The performance represents another encouraging step for Yirenkyi as he works to establish himself at Coventry. His ability to produce an unexpected pass or piece of skill in the final third could become an important feature of his progress as he adapts to the demands of English football.

Lampard’s assessment also reflects Coventry’s confidence in the Ghanaian’s long-term prospects. The manager believes Yirenkyi can continue to develop and take on a more significant role within the side.

His involvement in the move for Awoniyi’s goal showed the impact he can have in advanced positions, while the praise from Lampard underlined the high regard in which he is held at the club. For Yirenkyi, it was a notable contribution as he seeks to make his mark at Coventry.

The Sky Blues began the league season with a defeat by reigning champions Arsenal. They will be looking to secure their first league win when they play Hull City on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

Yirenkyi’s display against Plymouth gives Coventry an additional positive to take into that fixture, with Lampard hoping the youngster can build on his promising showing. The manager’s comments suggest the club sees the young midfielder’s development as an important part of the team’s progress, while also recognising that there is still more to come from him.

Coventry will therefore aim to turn the encouragement of the Plymouth victory into league success against Hull City. For Yirenkyi, the match provides another opportunity to demonstrate the talent Lampard has highlighted and to continue establishing himself in the team.
