Coventry City forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has described team-mate Caleb Yirenkyi as the “modern N’Golo Kante”, praising the Ghanaian midfielder’s quiet nature away from football and his confidence on the pitch.
Thomas-Asante says Yirenkyi is a reserved character who largely keeps to himself, but believes that calm personality masks a strong sense of self-belief.
“I call him the modern N’Golo Kante. He’s so quiet and keeps himself to himself. However, he is a really confident character. He is quietly confident,” Thomas-Asante told Premier League TV.
The comments underline the impression Yirenkyi has made at Coventry City since arriving in a club-record transfer. Although the 20-year-old is not regarded as an especially outspoken presence away from football, his performances have reflected a player willing to take responsibility and express himself during matches.
Thomas-Asante’s comparison with France international N’Golo Kante also points to the qualities he believes Yirenkyi brings to the team. The Ghanaian has shown energy in midfield, composure in possession and the ability to affect games from more than one position.
Yirenkyi has also operated as a full-back, adding to his value to Coventry City as he continues to develop under head coach Frank Lampard. Lampard has already spoken positively about the youngster’s talent and potential.
The midfielder was involved in Coventry’s latest attacking success in the League Cup, producing a clever flick to help create the opening goal in a 4-2 victory over Plymouth on Tuesday night.
His progress has also been recognised on the international stage. At the 2026 World Cup, Thomas-Asante supplied the pass for Yirenkyi to score a late winner for the Black Stars in their opening group match against Panama.
After that game, Thomas-Asante backed the 20-year-old to secure a major transfer in the future. Yirenkyi subsequently moved to Coventry City from Danish club FC Nordsjælland in a deal reported to be worth 27 million euros (£23.1m), with a further three million euros (£2.5m) available in add-ons.
The transfer made Yirenkyi the most expensive signing in Coventry City’s history.
His arrival has raised expectations around the young midfielder, but Thomas-Asante’s assessment suggests his team-mates have already noticed a combination of understated character and growing authority. While Yirenkyi remains quiet off the field, his influence in matches is becoming increasingly visible as he adapts to English football and Lampard’s demands.
For Coventry, the hope will be that the player’s development continues to match the level of investment made in bringing him to the club. For Yirenkyi, the early signs are encouraging: he has earned international recognition, delivered a decisive moment for Ghana and begun to make an impact for his new club.
