Hull City made Premier League history by beating Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday, giving the promoted side a first top-flight victory over United and handing their opponents a series of unwanted records.

According to statistics network Squawka, the result was Hull City’s first Premier League win against Manchester United.

It also marked the first time Manchester United have lost their opening match of a top-flight season to a promoted side.

“Manchester United have lost to a promoted side in their opening game of a top-flight season for the first time in their history. 🤯”

The defeat extended a difficult sequence for Manchester United at the start of the campaign. They have now lost their opening league fixture in consecutive seasons for the first time in the history of the Premier League.

Manchester United began the previous season with a 1-0 defeat by Arsenal before suffering a 2-0 loss against Hull City in the 2026-27 campaign.

Squawka summarised the sequence as follows:

“Manchester United have lost their opening league game in consecutive seasons for the first time ever in the Premier League. 😬”

The result therefore gave Hull City a notable place in the club’s Premier League history, while Manchester United’s opening-day record became the focus of the post-match statistics.

Analysis from WhoScored highlighted another feature of United’s performance. Manchester United attempted 39 crosses during the match but failed to register a single headed shot on target.

“Manchester United attempted 39 crosses vs Hull and failed to register a single headed shot on target. 🏹✖️”

That statistic underlined the lack of effectiveness in United’s attacking approach against Hull City. Despite repeatedly delivering the ball into the penalty area, Manchester United were unable to produce a headed effort on target.

For Hull City, the 2-0 scoreline represented more than three points on the opening weekend. It was their first Premier League victory against Manchester United and their first win over a promoted side in the opening fixture of a top-flight season, according to the records cited by Squawka.

For Manchester United, the defeat combined a damaging result with two unwanted milestones: it was their first opening-day loss to a promoted club in the top flight and their first succession of opening league defeats across two Premier League seasons.

The previous meeting mentioned in the statistics came on the opening weekend of the 2025-26 season, when Arsenal beat Manchester United 1-0. Hull City then followed that result with a 2-0 victory in 2026-27.
