Paul Pogba’s troubled spell at Monaco appears to be approaching its end after the former France midfielder suffered another injury, with reported interest from Major League Soccer and Saudi Arabia offering potential routes for his next move.
Almost three weeks have passed since Monaco and Pogba announced that they were moving towards a separation, yet the 33-year-old continued to train with the first-team squad during the club’s preparations for the new season.
The 2018 World Cup winner had initially endured a difficult start to pre-season, but returned to the pitch and worked alongside his team-mates. He was then selected for half of Monaco’s first friendly match, a 5-2 victory over Saint-Priest.
However, Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro had already hinted at an early end to the midfielder’s time at the club during a pre-season press conference. Pogba’s contract is scheduled to run until June 2027.
The latest setback came earlier this week at Monaco’s training camp in England, where Pogba injured his left thigh during a session.
That injury is considered a major blow to the player and is expected to prevent him from featuring for Monaco again. Several media reports have also claimed that the club are preparing to terminate his contract.
According to French newspaper L’Equipe on Thursday, Pogba has received offers from clubs in Major League Soccer and Saudi Arabia. However, he is expected to be unable to train for six weeks, making the injury particularly poorly timed as he attempts to secure a new club.
The absence leaves Pogba facing another period on the sidelines at a crucial stage of his career. He had only recently returned to regular training after a turbulent period that had limited his involvement with Monaco.
Despite the difficulties, becoming a free agent would give Pogba greater flexibility in the next phase of his career. Should his contract with Monaco be ended, he would be able to join a new club at any time, including after the transfer window has closed.
His immediate future therefore remains uncertain, with interest reportedly emerging from both the United States and Saudi Arabia while he recovers from the thigh injury.
