Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, has died at the age of 68, two months after his family disclosed that he had been in hospital with an ongoing health condition.
Jorge reportedly died at about 22:00 local time on Friday, 7 August, at a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, near the family home. His death was initially reported by Argentine media before being confirmed by Newell’s Old Boys, the club where Lionel Messi began his football career.
Newell’s Old Boys described Jorge as a dedicated supporter and the father of Argentina captain Messi. The club also paid tribute to the important part he played in his son’s development, from his earliest involvement in football through to his emergence as one of the sport’s leading figures.
“His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory,” the club said.
The Argentine club extended its condolences to Messi, his mother Celia Cuccittini, his siblings Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol, and the rest of the family.
The cause of Jorge Messi’s death has not been disclosed.
Jorge was a major presence throughout his son’s career, acting as his agent and business manager while helping to manage his professional affairs and commercial interests. His involvement began during Messi’s time at Newell’s Old Boys’ Malvinas academy and continued as the forward moved to the top of world football.
Health concerns
News of Jorge Messi’s health problems emerged earlier this year after reports said he had suffered a medical episode at his home in January and was later admitted to hospital.
Lionel Messi had also referred publicly to a difficult period affecting his family after playing for Argentina against Algeria at the World Cup. Following a match in which he scored a hat-trick, Messi appeared emotional when asked about his feelings.
“No, honestly it’s something completely unrelated to sports. It’s been a few difficult days, complicated.”
Argentine journalist Eduardo Feinmann later reported that Messi’s father was dealing with health problems and had been experiencing them for several months. The family subsequently revealed that Jorge had been hospitalised because of an ongoing condition.
Jorge’s death was also acknowledged by CONMEBOL, the governing body for South American football.
“CONMEBOL deeply regrets the passing of Jorge Messi, father of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi. We accompany Lionel, his family, friends, and loved ones with respect and affection in this moment of profound grief. May he rest in peace,” it said.
The statement from Newell’s Old Boys highlighted Jorge Messi’s support for his son from the early stages of his football journey at Malvinas through to the highest level of the game. His role included both personal support and responsibility for managing key aspects of Messi’s career and commercial interests.
