At least 30 people have been killed in suspected missile and drone strikes by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Emergency Forces camps in the provinces of Marib and Hadramaut, according to Al Jazeera.
The attacks were reported as Iran said an agreement with Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was “on the verge of being finalised”. The two countries have agreed on the coordinates for shipping routes through the strategically important waterway, according to the broadcaster.
The reported strikes on the military bases add to tensions across the region, with developments also continuing in and around Lebanon, Israel and the occupied West Bank.
In the United States, President Donald Trump rejected reports that the country was facing shortages of weapons. He said the Pentagon had “massive amounts of munitions” and promised that those responsible for leaking the information would be identified and prosecuted.
Trump’s comments came amid continued focus on the availability of weapons, while the situation in the Middle East remained volatile.
Israel also continued its air strikes in southern Lebanon after two Israeli soldiers were killed in an explosion in the town of Majdal Selem.
The latest strikes followed the deaths of the two soldiers and formed part of a wider series of military operations reported across the region.
Israeli forces carried out further raids across the occupied West Bank, with troops entering the Qalandiya refugee camp for a second consecutive day.
Several Palestinians were injured during the operation and dozens were arrested, Al Jazeera reported.
The reported attacks and raids came alongside the developments involving the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for which Iran and Oman have agreed coordinates as part of a proposed reopening deal. Iran said the agreement was close to completion, describing it as “on the verge of being finalised”.
The deaths in Marib and Hadramaut were attributed to suspected Houthi missile and drone attacks on Emergency Forces camps. The Houthis are Yemen’s rebel movement, and the reported strikes targeted military sites in two provinces.
At the same time, Washington’s response centred on the denial of alleged weapons shortages and a pledge to pursue those accused of disclosing the information.
The United States president said the Pentagon possessed substantial supplies of ammunition, using the phrase “massive amounts of munitions”, and said those responsible for the leaks would face prosecution.
In southern Lebanon, Israeli military action continued after the explosion in Majdal Selem that killed two Israeli soldiers. In the West Bank, the Qalandiya refugee camp remained the focus of Israeli operations for a second day, with reports of injuries and arrests among Palestinians.
All of the developments were reported as the proposed Iran-Oman arrangement on the Strait of Hormuz moved closer to completion.
