Roger Ibanez could become the latest Al-Ahli player targeted by a Premier League club this summer, with Aston Villa having made contact with the Brazilian defender’s representatives.
The 27-year-old has paused negotiations over a new contract with the Saudi club, according to trusted journalist Sacha Tavolieri. Ibanez’s current agreement is due to expire at the end of next season.
Tavolieri reported on social media platform X that the defender halted discussions after attracting interest from several Premier League clubs. Aston Villa are understood to be the most interested side and have already opened communication with his representatives.
No formal offer has been made for Ibanez at this stage.
The possibility of the centre-back leaving Al-Ahli comes shortly after German manager Matthias Jaissle resigned from his position at the club. Jaissle stepped down last Thursday in order to take charge of Newcastle United next season, succeeding former manager Eddie Howe.
Although the manager’s departure has been linked to the growing uncertainty around Al-Ahli, Ibanez’s potential move is being driven by interest from England rather than by a confirmed transfer agreement.
Ibanez previously attracted attention from Premier League clubs while playing for Italian side Roma. However, he chose to move to Al-Ahli in the summer of 2023.
Since joining the Saudi club, he has established himself as one of the team’s most important players. His performances have helped Al-Ahli win the AFC Champions League Elite for two successive seasons, as well as the Saudi Super Cup for the first time in nine years.
The defender’s current contract situation means Al-Ahli could face increased pressure to decide whether to extend his stay or consider offers during the summer transfer window. At present, Aston Villa’s approach has not resulted in a formal bid, while negotiations over a renewal remain suspended.
Ibanez’s possible departure would represent another significant change for Al-Ahli following Jaissle’s resignation. The Brazilian arrived from Roma with a reputation that had already attracted interest in England, and his development in Saudi Arabia has strengthened his status as a leading player at the club.
For now, Aston Villa’s interest has progressed only to contact with the player’s representatives. Any move will depend on whether the Premier League club submits an official proposal and whether Al-Ahli can reach a fresh agreement with a defender whose contract still has one season remaining.
