Jordan Henderson says he “couldn’t turn down Chelsea” after completing a two-year move to the club from Brentford.

The 36-year-old midfielder joins Chelsea following a spell with Brentford and becomes the second experienced English player recruited by the club this summer. His arrival follows Chelsea’s signing of forward Danny Welbeck.

Henderson brings significant experience at the highest level of English football, having won the Premier League title with Liverpool. His move to Chelsea gives the club another senior English player, with the transfer completed ahead of the new season.

The former Liverpool player was also part of the England squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He made a cameo appearance for the Three Lions during the tournament, but his involvement was cut short by injury after he broke his wrist in England’s Round of 16 victory over Mexico.

Despite that setback, Henderson remains part of the latest chapter in his career after agreeing to join Chelsea. Speaking after the move was finalised, he said the opportunity was one he could not reject.

“I couldn’t turn down Chelsea”

Henderson’s transfer from Brentford to Chelsea is for an initial two-year period. The deal marks a further step in the midfielder’s career after his Premier League title success with Liverpool and his involvement with England at the 2026 World Cup.

Chelsea’s decision to sign Henderson also means the club have added another experienced English player to their squad this summer. Welbeck was the first, with the forward arriving before Henderson’s move was completed.

The new Chelsea signing’s most recent international involvement came in England’s last-16 tie against Mexico. Henderson appeared as a substitute in that match before suffering a broken wrist during the Three Lions’ victory. His tournament involvement therefore included both a brief appearance and an injury sustained in a knockout-stage win.

Now, after leaving Brentford, Henderson will continue his career at Chelsea on a two-year deal. The move links the experienced midfielder with a club that have already added Welbeck as part of their summer recruitment.

For Henderson, the transfer represents an opportunity he felt unable to pass up. His comments underline the appeal of joining Chelsea, while the completed deal confirms that the former Premier League title winner will remain in English football after his spell with Brentford.

The 36-year-old’s arrival also gives Chelsea another player with experience of winning the Premier League and representing England on the international stage. Those milestones form the main backdrop to his move, which was confirmed after Chelsea agreed a two-year transfer with Brentford.

Henderson’s first comments as a Chelsea player were focused on the strength of the opportunity rather than the difficulty of leaving Brentford. Having completed the move, he made clear that the chance to join Chelsea was one he could not turn down.
