Ghana face tougher Cameroon test in WAFCON Group D, says Bjorkegren

Ghana head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says Cameroon will provide a significantly tougher challenge than Cape Verde when the Black Queens play their second Group D match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ghana began their campaign with a victory over Cape Verde, securing three points in their opening fixture. Bjorkegren said the team had quickly moved on from that result and was already concentrating on the next match.

“Like always, we’re looking forward to the next game. We did what we should in the first game, we took the three points and moved on. We did good things, but there are also things we can learn from and improve,” Bjorkegren said.

The Swedish coach expects Cameroon to present a higher-quality opponent, highlighting the experience and ability within the Indomitable Lionesses squad.

“With respect to Cape Verde, it’s going to be one level up. We’re going to play against a good Cameroon team with experienced players and quality. They have a good balance because they also have young, hungry players,” he explained.

Bjorkegren also believes Cameroon could be better organised under their new coach, who has had additional time to work with the squad. That preparation, he said, could make the team more difficult for Ghana to break down.

“I know the coach has been coming into the team, and I guess that will help them because they’re going to be potentially more organised,” he noted.

The Ghana boss accepts that his side will face a demanding contest but remains confident in the players he has been working with. He said the Black Queens could even benefit from facing a stronger opponent.

“I think it’s going to be a tough one, but I know the girls very well now and I believe in them. I also know that when the opponent is more difficult to play against, it normally means we play a better game,” he added.

Ghana will now seek to build on their opening victory against Cape Verde and strengthen their position in Group D. A second success would move the Black Queens closer to qualification for the knockout stage of the continental tournament.

Cameroon, meanwhile, will be aiming to make a strong start to their campaign when they meet Ghana. Bjorkegren’s assessment reflects the qualities he expects from the Indomitable Lionesses, particularly their combination of experienced players and younger, ambitious members of the squad.

The match will therefore offer Ghana a more demanding examination of their progress at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with the Black Queens hoping their opening result can provide a platform for another important performance.
