Kylian Mbappe returns to EA Sports FC 27 cover after record‐breaking World Cup

Kylian Mbappe has been unveiled as the cover star of EA Sports FC 27’s Ultimate Edition, days after cementing his status as the World Cup’s all‐time leading scorer.

The Real Madrid and France forward will front the special edition of the game when it is released in mid‐September 2026, marking his return to the flagship football series’ cover for the first time in four years.

It is the fourth time Mbappe has appeared on the cover of EA’s leading football title, formerly known as EA Sports FIFA.

The 27‐year‐old confirmed the news himself by posting the official cover image on social media, alongside a brief message: “انا عدت” – Arabic for “I’m back”.

Mbappe equals Messi, closes in on Rooney record

Mbappe’s latest appearance puts him alongside Lionel Messi on four cover stars each, behind only two legends of the game in the EA hierarchy.

England’s Wayne Rooney still holds the outright record with six cover appearances, while Brazil great Ronaldinho has featured five times.

Explaining the decision to select Mbappe again, EA Sports representative Jeff Charm said: “انجازات كيليان مع ناديه ومنتخب بلاده رسخته كاحد ابرز اللاعبين في جيله”.

The Frenchman’s rise to becoming one of the faces of global football has been mirrored by his recurring presence on EA’s most high‐profile product, which is routinely among the world’s best‐selling games each year.

World Cup heroics drive timing of EA announcement

The announcement comes hard on the heels of Mbappe’s exploits at the 2026 World Cup, where he spearheaded France’s run to the semi‐finals.

France were ultimately eliminated by Spain, who went on to lift the trophy by beating Argentina in the final. But Mbappe’s individual tournament was historic.

He claimed the Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals, becoming the first player ever to win the World Cup top‐scorer award twice.

In the same tournament, he moved clear at the top of the all‐time World Cup scoring charts. Mbappe now has 22 World Cup goals, surpassing Lionel Messi’s tally of 21.

Reaching that landmark at the age of 27 leaves open the possibility of extending his record further, should he continue with the French national team into future tournaments.

Global icon on and off the pitch

Mbappe’s return to the EA Sports FC cover underscores his commercial and cultural reach beyond his performances for Real Madrid and France.

The Ultimate Edition, which traditionally features a single marquee player on its packaging and marketing, is targeted at dedicated fans of the series and often comes with additional in‐game content.

For EA, aligning that premium product with a player fresh from a record‐breaking World Cup serves to reinforce Mbappe’s image as one of the defining footballers of his generation.

While France fell short of another World Cup final, the forward’s individual records and his renewed visibility on one of gaming’s most recognisable covers are likely to strengthen his standing as a global football icon ahead of the 2026–27 season.
