Andre Ayew’s World Cup chances depend on coach’s plans – Agyemang-Badu

Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu believes the possibility of Andre Ayew returning to the national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will largely depend on the decisions of the head coach.

Agyemang-Badu shared his thoughts during an interview with Citi Sports, where he reflected on Ayew’s experience and current form while discussing the factors that usually influence squad selection for major tournaments.

According to the former Black Stars midfielder, national team coaches normally choose players based on how well they fit into their tactical approach.

For that reason, he believes the decision to include Ayew in the World Cup squad will come down to whether the coach feels the veteran forward suits his plans for the tournament.

“Normally it depends on the coach, his philosophy, his ideas and the kind of players he needs for the World Cup,” Agyemang-Badu said.

“Andre is doing very well, he’s playing well and scoring goals. If the coach thinks his philosophy and game plan require him, then he merits a place in the team.”

Agyemang-Badu and Ayew share a long football history, having played together during Ghana’s memorable triumph at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

That victory remains one of Ghana’s greatest achievements in youth football, and both players were key members of the squad that lifted the trophy.

Despite ongoing discussions about Ayew’s place in the national team setup, Agyemang-Badu suggested that the experienced forward remains committed to his professional career and would still be willing to represent Ghana if called upon.

“He hasn’t stopped playing football. What I know about him is that he’s concentrated on his club football, but if there is an opportunity for him to help the nation, he will be willing to come,” he added.

The former midfielder also acknowledged that the final squad announcement for the World Cup will likely generate strong reactions from fans and football analysts.

However, he believes the technical team deserves the trust of supporters when making such important decisions.

“When the list comes out we will all scrutinise it and support the team. But at the end of the day the coach knows the kind of players he wants to go with.”

With preparations intensifying for the 2026 World Cup, Ghana is expected to confirm its squad after May.

The tournament is approaching quickly, leaving the coaching staff with important decisions to make as they assemble a team capable of representing the country on the global stage.
