Nigeria’s World Cup lifeline has been cut.
World football’s governing body, FIFA, has officially unveiled the final six nations set to compete in the inter-confederation play-off tournament for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — and DR Congo stand as Africa’s only representative.
The confirmation effectively slams the door on Nigeria national football team, ending their lingering hopes of sneaking into the Mundial through the back door.
In an accreditation circular issued to journalists, FIFA outlined the structure of the tournament and confirmed the six participating nations: Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname.
That announcement ends months of suspense.
Nigeria’s football authorities had fiercely contested their dramatic defeat to DR Congo in the CAF play-offs back in November 2025. The decisive clash ended 1-1 before heading to penalties — where the Super Eagles fell short.
The Nigeria Football Federation subsequently lodged a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the encounter and seeking to overturn the result.
But FIFA’s latest confirmation leaves no room for doubt.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places at the FIFA World Cup 2026, to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States across 16 Host Cities,” the statement read.
“All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”
The play-off tournament kicks off on March 26.
For DR Congo, the dream remains alive.
For Nigeria, the curtain has fallen.
