Asante Kotoko interim head coach Prince Owusu has assured supporters that the team will bounce back from their recent struggles, pledging improved performances as they prepare for Sunday’s Ghana Premier League Super Clash against arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak.
Owusu stepped into the caretaker role following the club’s painful MTN FA Cup elimination and has since focused on rebuilding morale within both the squad and the fan base. The Porcupine Warriors saw their title defence end in disappointment after a penalty shootout defeat to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium — a result that ultimately led to the resignation of head coach Abdul Karim Zito.
With the responsibility now on his shoulders, Owusu has moved quickly to steady the ship during a decisive phase of the season. Addressing supporters, he acknowledged the team’s shortcomings and offered a direct apology for failing to meet expectations.
“I think we are here for them [the fans]. We are here to play for and entertain them. What they were looking for, we were not able to give to them, so when they react, they have the right to do that.
“I’m glad nothing worse came out of it. But we just apologize. That will not happen again.”
Kotoko head into the derby occupying fifth place on the league table with 35 points from 21 matches, just one point behind fourth-placed Hearts of Oak, while Medeama SC remain leaders with 43 points. The Kumasi giants have managed only one victory in their last five league games, increasing the pressure ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter.
Sunday’s clash at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium is therefore more than just a rivalry fixture — it represents a critical opportunity for Kotoko to reignite their campaign, regain momentum, and restore the confidence of their passionate supporters.
