Former Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has expressed disappointment at not getting the opportunity to personally say goodbye to the club’s supporters following his resignation from the technical helm.
Zito stepped down shortly after the Porcupine Warriors’ Round of 16 elimination from the MTN FA Cup at the hands of Aduana FC, a result that intensified scrutiny around his position and ultimately led to his departure.
The veteran trainer, who assumed the role in July last year, leaves behind a trophy-laden but brief spell with the Kumasi giants. During his tenure, he guided Kotoko to victory in the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup and secured a total of four trophies, achievements he believes underline his impact at the club.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Zito maintained pride in his legacy while acknowledging his one major regret — not having the chance to thank the fans directly for their unwavering support.
“I am a legend of the club, and if an issue arises, you need to remain calm and talk things out. I have resigned, and that is it. I would have wished to say goodbye to the fans for their support. I have been on the job for barely a year, and I won four trophies,” he said.
Kotoko’s recent form had raised concerns among supporters, with the team managing just one win in their last five Ghana Premier League outings. The inconsistent run left the club sitting fifth on the league table, eight points adrift of leaders Medeama SC at the time of his exit.
In the wake of Zito’s resignation, first assistant coach Prince Owusu has been appointed interim head coach, with Mohammed Hamza Obeng who oversees the club’s junior side stepping in to provide additional technical support.
Attention now turns to Kotoko’s upcoming league fixture against fierce rivals Accra Hearts of Oak in their Matchday 22 encounter, a crucial clash that offers the Porcupine Warriors an opportunity to steady the ship and build on the foundation laid during Zito’s tenure.
