President John Dramani Mahama has named Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku as the first Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, handing the responsibility to a veteran finance professional.
The appointment places a banking expert with over three decades of experience at the centre of a reform agenda aimed at reshaping how sports are financed in Ghana.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has depended heavily on government subventions and occasional private donations to keep activities running.
Those sources, however, have often proven insufficient, leaving major infrastructure and development projects underfunded or abandoned midway.
The Ghana Sports Fund Bill, 2025, was introduced to address these shortcomings by creating a structured and sustainable financing system.
Under the law, the Fund is expected to unlock sports’ potential as a contributor to national development.
In his new role, Dr Wuaku will supervise the Fund’s secretariat and manage its daily operations.
He will also be responsible for executing board decisions while enforcing transparency and proper use of resources.
Financing for the Fund will come from multiple streams, including parliamentary support, sports lotteries, betting taxes, gate proceeds, sponsorship contributions, and levies on commercial sports activities.
