Algeria secured a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last 16 with a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso, thanks to Riyad Mahrez’s first-half penalty.

Mahrez, Algeria’s all-time leading scorer at AFCON with nine goals, sent Herve Koffi the wrong way in the 23rd minute.

This victory ensures their progression to the knockout rounds.

Burkina Faso, who had a strong start to the tournament, were unable to capitalize on their chances, despite dominating possession (51%).

Algeria’s defense held strong, with goalkeeper Luca Zidane making crucial saves to deny Burkina Faso’s attacks.

Algeria now tops Group E with six points, while Burkina Faso sits second with three points.

Algeria will face Equatorial Guinea next, while Burkina Faso takes on Sudan.
