Benin secured their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory with a 1-0 win over Botswana on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at the Stade Olympique De Rabat in Morocco.
Yohan Roche scored the decisive goal in the 28th minute, deflecting a shot past Botswana’s goalkeeper, Goitseone Phoko.
This historic win marks Benin’s first triumph in 16 AFCON attempts, dating back to their debut in 2004.
Benin’s previous best finish was quarter-finals in 2019, while Botswana, who were beaten 3-0 by Senegal in their opening match, have now lost five consecutive AFCON matches.
The win lifts Benin to three points, level with Senegal and DR Congo in Group D.
Benin will face Senegal in their next match, while Botswana takes on DR Congo on Tuesday, December 31, 2025.
