2026 World Cup: Nigeria file complaint to FIFA over eligibility of DR Congo players

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has filed a complaint with FIFA over the eligibility of DR Congo players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, citing alleged breaches of Congolese nationality laws.

The NFF claims Wan-Bissaka’s nationality switch wasn’t fully completed and that he holds a European passport, violating DR Congo’s dual citizenship ban.

Several other DR Congo players are also accused of holding French passports.

The NFF is pushing for DR Congo’s disqualification, which could see Nigeria advance to the World Cup playoffs.

FIFA has initiated an investigation, and a decision is pending. If upheld, DR Congo could face sanctions, including match forfeitures or disqualification from the intercontinental playoffs.

DR Congo’s football director, Herita Ilunga, has dismissed Nigeria’s claims, arguing FIFA doesn’t consider legal nationality but sporting nationality.

The outcome remains uncertain, with Nigeria seeking to revive their 2026 World Cup hopes.
