Ghanaian midfielder Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery in Japan after suffering a double leg fracture during the Black Stars’ 2-0 defeat to Japan in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup.
The 24-year-old Toulouse player was stretchered off the pitch in visible pain after an awkward twist early in the second half.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed that the procedure was completed without complications at Toyota Memorial Hospital, and Abu has begun the acute phase of his rehabilitation.
A physiotherapist will remain with him in Japan to oversee intensive therapy sessions, and a senior member of the technical team will accompany him back to France once he’s discharged.
“We are grateful to everyone who supported us in this journey,” the GFA said in a statement. “We are particularly grateful to the Black Stars management and technical team for their support during these last few days and will continue to count on their support during the rehabilitation process.”
Abu’s injury is expected to keep him out for a lengthy period, ruling him out of Ghana’s upcoming friendly against South Korea and potentially the 2026 World Cup.
