The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, led a delegation to Jubilee House to present the Democracy Cup trophy to President John Dramani Mahama.
The event drew notable figures in Ghana’s sports space, including Sports Minister Kofi Adams, NSA Director Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, GFA President Kurt Okraku, and officials of Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics.
The second edition of the Democracy Cup will take place on September 5 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, with Hearts set to clash against city rivals Olympics.
Introduced in 2024 as a parliamentary initiative, the competition is designed to promote civic engagement and unity through football. Its maiden edition saw Asante Kotoko edge Hearts 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Firmly carving its place on Ghana’s football calendar, the Democracy Cup has become a symbol of the nation’s democratic progress while highlighting the unifying spirit of sport. The GFA has confirmed that this year’s winner will also earn the chance to feature in a three-team tournament in the United States in May 2026.
