The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season officially kicks off on Sunday with a Champion of Champions showdown at the Duns Park in Bibiani between GoldStars and Asante Kotoko.

GoldStars will walk onto the familiar turf with the swagger of newly crowned league champions, having clinched their maiden Premier League title against the likes of Hearts of Oak, Heart of Lions, and Asante Kotoko.

The Miners are now chasing another piece of history as they make their debut in this prestigious contest.

However, Kotoko arrive in Bibiani with tradition and pedigree on their side, having lifted the Champion of Champions title three times in a row between 2012 and 2014.

The two sides already tested each other’s strength during the pre-season GHALCA Top 4 tournament, where GoldStars rallied from behind to beat Kotoko 2-1 before going on to win the competition outright.

That result gives the Miners a psychological edge, but Kotoko want to return to winning ways as their coach Karim Zito described it as a game of “revenge”.

“It will be a very difficult match. As you know, they also beat us during the Top Four. So, it will be a revenge,” he said.

“Revenge not on physical issues, but on the people that we also like to reward. To also beat them to make it equal.”

GoldStars coach Frimpong Manso said: “It’s just a preparatory game for teams going to Africa. It’s not a challenge at all, we are going to do our best to prepare and go to Africa.”

The titanic clash kicks off at 3pm.
