Gold Stars defender Vincent Atingah says the reigning Premier League champions are not intimidated by the pedigree of Asante Kotoko as both sides gear up for the 2025 Champion of Champions clash.
The Miners, who stunned the nation by winning their first-ever league title last season, face FA Cup holders Kotoko on Sunday, August 31, at Duns Park to officially usher in the 2025/26 campaign.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated showdown, Atingah stressed that while Kotoko are a household name in Ghanaian football, Gold Stars have earned their own respect and will not be overawed.
“We have played with Kotoko before. We are in the league with them, so we know them,” the experienced defender told reporters. “We are not scared at all. Kotoko is Kotoko, but we are also Gold Stars. They are big, but we are also Gold Stars.”
The Bekwai-based side view the contest as an opportunity to make yet another bold statement after their historic league triumph, with their fans eager to see them add more silverware to their cabinet.
Kotoko, however, arrive with their own ambitions, fresh from their MTN FA Cup success and backed by their long tradition as one of Ghana’s most decorated clubs.
But Atingah insists the champions’ preparations and confidence will count. “Every team will prove their worth on the day,” he added.
A bumper crowd is expected at Duns Park as Ghana’s two biggest winners from last season battle for early bragging rights.
