Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has renewed calls for a review of the ban on alcohol sponsorship in football, warning it is costing the sport millions in potential revenue.
“Today, I must once again highlight this reality, not to challenge regulation, but to appeal for reform grounded in logic, fairness, and global best practice,” Okraku told delegates at the 31st Ordinary Congress.
He described the current restrictions as “paradoxical and economically counterproductive,” noting that global competitions like the UEFA Champions League benefit from alcohol sponsorship while Ghanaian football is denied the same.
Okraku urged the creation of a responsible regulatory framework with the FDA, sports authorities, and health advocates to unlock new funding for clubs, improve player welfare, and enhance competitiveness.
