President of New Edubiase United, Abdul Salam Yakubu, popularly known as ‘Sabato’, has firmly opposed the proposed introduction of a third term for Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidents, insisting that eight years is sufficient for any leader to deliver on their promises.
Currently, GFA presidents serve a maximum of two four-year terms, though a third term could be approved if backed by the football fraternity.
Current GFA boss Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku, who assumed office in October 2019, is midway through his second term and could seek re-election if the proposal passes ; a move that has sparked debate among fans and stakeholders.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Sabato dismissed the idea, stressing that extending the mandate beyond two terms “doesn’t make sense.”
“I have written to the FA to demand the number of clubs that have proposed the extension,” he said. “Kurt Okraku still has more than two years left, and I believe eight years is enough for any president to do what he can for our football. I’ll always stand by my position that a third term is unnecessary.”
The final decision on the proposal will be made at the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress on Monday, August 12, 2025.
