Congo scored a late equalizer to draw 1-1 with Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan in their Group D opener at the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
Musa Hussien gave Sudan the lead in the 29th minute, but Carly Ekongo’s 86th-minute strike salvaged a point for Congo.
The match was marked by intense drama, with Sudan nearly sealing victory in stoppage time through Mazin Simbo’s header, which was brilliantly saved by Congo goalkeeper Ulrich Samba.
This result extends Sudan’s winless run in open play at CHAN to five matches. Congo’s next challenge will be against defending champions Senegal, while Sudan faces Nigeria in their success.
The draw marked Congo’s first goal in open play in over three CHAN matches, ending a scoreless drought that dated back to 2020.
