Head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in the near future.

Speaking to the media after the team’s return to Accra on Monday, the Swedish tactician praised the squad’s growth and resilience throughout the tournament in Morocco, where Ghana clinched third place after edging South Africa on penalties.

“Tactically, we learned from the first game and made some small changes,” Bjorkegren said.
“The future is really bright in Ghana. We need to keep working hard. We can see how close we are… of course we know we can win it [the WAFCON],” he added.

Ghana returned to the WAFCON stage for the first time since 2018 and started their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to South Africa. They bounced back with a draw against Mali and a commanding 4-1 win over Tanzania to qualify from Group C.

The Queens then defeated Algeria in the quarterfinals before falling to hosts Morocco in the semifinals. They wrapped up the tournament with a hard-fought victory over Banyana Banyana to secure the bronze medal ; Ghana’s first podium finish since 2016.
