Bibiani GoldStars defender Vincent Atinga calls for minimum wage for GPL players

Ghana Premier League winner Vincent Adae Atinga has called for a minimum wage for top-flight players, citing the paltry salaries paid to some players.

“I talk to a lot of players and you can see salary-wise, things are not good… Can you imagine a Ghana Premier League player taking GH¢1,000? To be honest, it’s very bad because you may have parents and even the GH¢1000 doesn’t come [on time],” Atinga told Onua Sports.

He advocates for a salary cap to improve players’ standard of living, suggesting a minimum wage of GH¢2,000 or GH¢3,000.

“At least there should be a minimum wage for players and the authorities can work that out,” he added.

Atinga noted that some players rely on senior players for support due to their meager salaries.

“Some take so small that they depend on us the seniors to sort them out in some way.”

Atinga, who helped Bibiani Goldstars win the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League title, promised to help the team reach the CAF Champions League group stage.

He believes a minimum wage would alleviate financial struggles faced by many players in the league, ensuring they can focus on their careers without added financial stress.
