Al Ahly back Jose Riveiro despite poor Club World Cup start, eye squad reinforcements

Al Ahly have thrown their support behind head coach Jose Riveiro despite a slow start to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The 12-time African champions have managed just one point from two games; drawing 0-0 in their opener before falling 2-0 to Brazilian side Palmeiras.

They now face a must-win clash against FC Porto on Tuesday at the MetLife Stadium, with kickoff at 01:00 GMT.

Though performances have been underwhelming, Al Ahly’s leadership remains firmly behind Riveiro and are reportedly revising their transfer strategy in response.

Initially focused on signing a left-back and a striker post-tournament, the club is now prioritizing reinforcements at right-back as well.

“Al Ahly’s management had intended to only support the left-back and striker positions. Things have changed radically now

The shift is due to poor form from Mohamed Hany, injury concerns with Omar Kamal’s backup, and Akram Tawfik’s exit.

While center-back additions are being considered, they’re not viewed as urgent due to the presence of Achraf Dari, Yasser Ibrahim, and recent arrivals Mustafa Al-Ash and Ahmed Ramadan Beckham.
