Lawrence Agyekum eyes permanent Black Stars spot after scoring debut goal

Cercle Brugge midfielder Lawrence Agyekum is determined to cement his place in the Black Stars after making an impressive start to his international career.

The 21-year-old made headlines during the Unity Cup last month, coming off the bench to score in Ghana’s 4-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the third-place playoff.

He had earlier debuted in the Black Stars’ emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Agyekum expressed confidence in his abilities and a desire to build on his early promise.

“I wasn’t surprised at scoring against Trinidad and Tobago because I knew I had to score,” he said. “Now, I want to keep focusing on my development and be consistent at club level. If you don’t do well, it’s difficult to get a national team call-up.”

Agyekum recently sealed a permanent deal with Cercle Brugge but is already attracting attention from bigger European clubs, including Dutch giants Feyenoord and Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

“Hopefully, if I get another call-up, I’ll still give 100% on the pitch ; just like I do for my club,” he added.

With talent, focus, and a hunger for more, Agyekum could be one of Ghana’s midfield stars to watch in the years ahead.
