Baba Rahman admits he was not deserving of 2021 AFCON qualifiers call-up

Ghana international Baba Rahman has revealed why he initially rejected a call-up for the 2021 AFCON qualifiers against Sudan. Rahman, who was recovering from an injury at Chelsea, felt he didn’t deserve the invitation.

“I honestly didn’t feel I deserved the call-up at the time, so I initially rejected it,” he admitted while speaking to Joy Sports exclusively.

However, after discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and then-coach Charles Akonnor, Rahman accepted the call-up due to the team’s shortage of left-backs.

“I honestly didn’t feel I deserved the call-up at the time, so I initially rejected it,” Rahman said. “But the GFA and Coach CK Akonnor explained that they were short on left-backs and needed someone with my experience. That’s why I eventually accepted.”

Akonnor’s decision to include Rahman was questioned by many due to his fitness concerns, but the coach emphasized the importance of experience in the squad.

Akonnor was later relieved of his duties following a poor start to Ghana’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
