Karim Zito defends Kwame Opoku’s Black Stars showing

Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has backed striker Kwame Opoku following criticism of his performance in Ghana’s recent 2-1 defeat to Nigeria during the 2025 Unity Cup.

Opoku led the line for the Black Stars in the semi-final at Brentford Community Stadium but was subbed off in the second half, with his replacement Brandon Thomas-Asante scoring Ghana’s only goal.

Despite the criticism, Zito argued on Peace FM that the Kotoko forward did not receive enough passes or support to influence the game effectively.

“It’s like sending someone to the market to cook palmnut soup but giving them no ingredients. He didn’t get enough service. He was pressing and making runs constantly.”

Up next for the Black Stars is against Mali and Chad in September’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
