The Black Queens suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in their second friendly match in Abidjan, concluding their two-game series ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The loss followed a 3-3 draw in the first match, where Ghana had thrown away a 3-0 lead. In the second match, both teams were scoreless at halftime, but Ivory Coast scored in the 52nd minute and held on for the win.
The Black Queens struggled to respond, and coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren will likely be concerned about their defensive lapses and attacking inconsistency. Ghana faces a tough challenge in Group C of WAFCON 2024, alongside Mali, South Africa, and Tanzania. The tournament is set to begin on July 5.
Ivory Coast, who didn’t qualify for WAFCON, used the matches to build momentum for the future. After the series, the Black Queens will return to Accra before heading to Morocco for the competition.
