With the Ghana Premier League title drifting out of reach, Abdul Karim Zito, interim head coach of Asante Kotoko, has shifted his full focus to the MTN FA Cup, declaring it his top priority in what could be his final act of redemption this season.
Speaking after Kotoko’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Medeama SC on Sunday, Zito didn’t shy away from the growing reality that the league may be lost. The Porcupine Warriors currently sit third, just two points off the summit, but with time running out, hopes of reclaiming the league title are slim.
Still, the veteran tactician has a different ambition.
“All my prayers are to win the FA Cup title,” Zito revealed. “I will be satisfied that, as a technical director, I did my best when I took over. I’m going to do everything to win.”
Since stepping into the head coach role midway through the campaign, the former Ghana U-20 boss has rejuvenated Kotoko’s form in both league and cup competitions.
His leadership has injected grit and purpose into the team, with Kotoko now eyeing a strong finish in the league and a shot at silverware.
The FA Cup offers just that opportunity. Kotoko will face Golden Kick, a lower-tier side, in the final on June 15; a match that Zito is treating as a chance to leave a lasting mark on the season.
Should Kotoko lift the FA Cup, it would not only salvage a campaign of near-misses but also validate Zito’s interim spell in charge; proof that, even in transition, the Porcupine Warriors remain contenders.
