Asare, Simpson, Opoku earn Black Stars call-up for Unity Cup in London

Three standout performers from the Ghana Premier League goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, defender Razak Simpson, and striker Kwame Opoku, have been called up to the Black Stars squad for the upcoming Unity Cup in London.

The trio departed Ghana on Thursday night to join the national team camp ahead of the four-nation tournament, which includes Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Asare, who plies his trade with Hearts of Oak, recently earned his senior national team debut during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and has since featured twice for the Black Stars.

He kept goal in Hearts’ win over Accra Lions on Friday before jetting off.

Razak Simpson, who is a key figure in Nations FC’s impressive season, will miss their crucial league tie against Samartex on Sunday.

Also, Asante Kotoko in-form striker Kwame Opoku will sit out their clash with Bibiani GoldStars.

Ghana are set to play Nigeria on May 28 in their tournament opener as the winner will advance to the final, while the loser plays in the third-place playoff scheduled for May 31.

The Unity Cup presents another opportunity for talents to impress on the international stage as Ghana fine-tunes its squad for the September World Cup qualifiers.
