As Ghana prepares to launch its U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, Head of Public Relations and Strategy at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has made it clear that the team’s top priority is securing a place at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Satellites will begin their Group C journey tonight against DR Congo at the New Suez Stadium, followed by matches against Senegal and the Central African Republic. The four semi-finalists at this year’s tournament will automatically qualify for the global showpiece.

Speaking to Asempa FM ahead of the opening fixture, Armstrong-Mortagbe expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and emphasized the importance of a strong start to the tournament.

“Ghana has often struggled in tournament openers, but Coach Desmond Ofei is determined to change that narrative,” he said. “The goal is to begin with a win over DR Congo and set the tone for the rest of the competition.”

He reiterated that the ultimate aim is to earn a spot at the U-20 World Cup, but noted that the ambitions extend beyond qualification.

“Our main objective is to qualify for the 2025 World Cup in Qatar,” Armstrong-Mortagbe explained. “But we’re not stopping there — once we’ve booked our ticket, the next step is to compete for the continental title.”

The Black Satellites are hopeful that a positive result tonight will put them firmly on course for both continental and global success.
