Defender Jonathan Mensah has been discharged after a night in the hospital following a head injury sustained during Ghana’s 1-1 draw away to the Central African Republic (CAR) in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier on Sunday afternoon.

A calming update by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) hours after the incident said Mensah “is in a stable condition and responding to treatment at Clinica Girasol – a private hospital in Luanda – Angola.”

CT scans conducted on the 31-year-old following a “headbutt from an opponent resulting in a concussion” came back with normal results.

But doctors advised allowing him “to spend the night at the hospital for further assessment and evaluation.”

Jonathan Mensah got released on Monday morning.

The Black Stars played out a 1-1 draw in the said match at Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda.

But Mensah – the towering centre-back – clashed heads with an opponent while going for a ball inside the CAR box around the 55th minute.

Coming off worse in the nasty incident, medical personnel rushed onto the field to treat the Columbus Crew captain for about five minutes before helping him off the field on a stretcher and into an ambulance for further care at the hospital.

The Black Stars will be departing Angola by Monday afternoon.

Jonathan Mensah will likely be excused from the team’s next trip to Japan for matches in the 2022 Kirin Cup Soccer tournament on June 10 and 14.
