Boye plays through pain barrier, concern for Ghana ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti says he is forced to play  John Boye consistently through the pain barrier making the defender a fitness concern for Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers next month.

The Ghana international has been one of the main features of the Red and Blacks team this season.

Boye has had to play virtually every single game for Rennes – even when injured to help his side in all the competitions they have been involved in this term.

Rennes have however been saddled with several injuries and suspensions to Boye’s alternatives – forcing manager Antonetti to field him frequently even through the pain barrier.

Antonetti has now revealed the 26-year-old needs two-three weeks rest in order for him to fully recover from an injury to his pubis.

“I try to make the most competitive team possible, despite the injuries and suspension,” he said.

“Taking the example of defender John Boye he plays under extreme conditions because of his hurt pubis.

“He would need to rest for two or three weeks, but this is not possible given the players at my disposal.

“John Boye played every game but does not participate in all training.”

Antonetti’s revelation is of great concern to Ghana coach Akwasi Appiah who will be relying on Boye for next month’s 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The ex-Heart of Lions defender has grown to become one of the key players in the Black Stars team and is expected to be named in the squad for the crucial qualifier against Sudan and Lesotho.

But with the revelation of Stade Rennes coach of the need to have Boye rest for two-three weeks, it is unclear whether the Ghana coach will be will run the risk of using him in his injury state.
