Mike Phelan is anticipated to quit Manchester United this summer, as are all three of Ralf Rangnick’s coaching hires.
United and Phelan are in talks over the conditions of his expected departure, with the club appreciating the 59-year-20-year old’s tenure with the club as a player and coach.
After Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in November, Phelan continued as assistant manager, although he was a remote presence on matchdays. Phelan was engaged by Rangnick in his last months as interim manager, despite his decreased role.

Phelan was elevated to United’s first-team coaching staff in 2001 to compensate for the departure of Steve McClaren, and McClaren, along with Mitchell van der Gaag, returned to the club this week as one of Erik ten Hag’s assistants.
After six months on Rangnick’s backroom staff, assistant coach Chris Armas, analyst Ewan Sharp, and sports psychologist Sascha Lense will all depart the club. In December, Armas, Sharp, and Lense all joined United.
Goalkeeping coaches Richard Hartis and Craig Mawson, as well as set-piece coach Eric Ramsay, are expected to remain at the club, according to club insiders.
Ramsay, 30, joined United from Chelsea last summer in reaction to the club’s shoddy defense in dead-ball situations, and he was chastised after the club failed to score from over 140 corners until Harry Maguire nodded in at Leeds in February.
Ramsay’s training responsibilities at United’s Carrington training facility grew with the exits of Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna in December, and he is still highly regarded at the club.
