Malawi foreign-based players arrive in camp ahead of Ghana clash

Malawi national team coach Kinnah Phiri could have a full squad on Tuesday as South Africa-based professionals continue trickling in ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations last round qualifier against Ghana’s Black Stars this Saturday at Civo Stadium, in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe.

The first to arrive was veteran striker Esau Kanyenda who has just joined South Africa’s third tier side Polokwane United, formerly Bay United.

Kanyenda arrived on Friday last week and he was followed by Bidvets Wits striker Robin Ngalande who jetted in on Sunday.

Team manager Stuart Mbolembole said they were expecting the rest of the professional players in by Monday.

“So far, so good, we are expecting Robert Ng’ambi, Harry Nyirenda, Simplex Nthala, Zicco Mkanda and Atusaye Nyondo to arrive this afternoon,” Mbolembole said on Monday.

“The last one to arrive will be Peter Wadabwa who will join us Tuesday. After that, we will have a full squad.”

The seven professionals join local players including returnees Moses Chavula, who is also back with his former team Mighty Wanderers, Davie Banda, formerly of Black Leopards and former Orlando Pirates duo Joseph Kamwendo and Chiukepo Msowoya.

The Flames have since relocated to Lilongwe and they are training at Silver Stadium as they strategize on how to upset a two-goal deficit to qualify for the 2013 South Africa Afcon final.

Malawi needs to beat Ghana at least 3-0 for them to qualify for the final following the 2-0 first leg loss in Accra.
