Former Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has bemoaned the declining football standards in the country.
The Ododiodoo MP voiced his concern about the state of the domestic top flight division in particular, emphasizing the need for substantial improvements.
In an interview with Citi Sports, he also highlighted Ghana’s lag behind other African nations, citing the recent performance of the Black Stars. Vanderpuye, a former sports journalist, stressed the urgency of taking action to revive the local league.
He stated, “We can’t deceive ourselves that we have a proper league; it’s not the case. When I attend matches, I question whether it’s a colts team or a division three match.”
He strongly criticized the league’s quality, describing it as far below that of premier league teams and expressing the view that the players’ standards are inadequate. Vanderpuye emphasized the necessity of addressing the shortcomings in the local league.
