Former Elmina Sharks trainer Yaw Acheampong has backed embattled Black Stars captain Andre Ayew following Ghana’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Ayew missed a crucial penalty against Uruguay and at the end, the South Americans got a 2-0 win, knocking Ghana out of the group stages.
Acheampong in an interview with Citi Sports said he is unhappy with how the Al-Sadd attacker has been treated by a section of Ghanaians.
“It was very sad because Messi also missed a penalty. I think Lewandowski also missed a penalty but it’s up to us to be behind the player [Ayew] when something like that happens.” Acheampong said.

“When Messi missed a penalty, the whole national players were behind him and made sure they motivated the team. Motivation has different factors and one of the major factors is the fans and the media.”
Ghana finished bottom of Group H with three points after losing to Portugal and Uruguay, having beaten South Korea in between.
