Gyan scooped the Sports Writers Association of Ghana Sports Personality of the Year and Footballer of the Year Awards for the year 2010 after which he reflected on what has been a love-hate relationship with the Ghanaian football public. The striker was about the most hated footballer among some Ghanaian fans as he struggled for goals at the 2008 Nations Cup on home soil. It got so bad he threatened at some point to walk out on the team. Three years from that time he has gone on t establish himself as undoubtedly the leading striker in the country and is delighted he has been able to get one over the critics. “A few years ago, some people did not want to see me in this country”, he told kickoffGhana.com after picking up his award. “They said I was the worst striker so it’s nice to prove the critics wrong and prove myself right. I was at an all time low a few years ago but I never doubted myself. That is why to be named the top Sportsman and top footballer in Ghana means so much to me.” Gyan picked up the award exactly a year from the day he struck a penalty against the woodwork at Soccer City in Johannesburg, denying Ghana and Africa a historic place in the semi finals of the World Cup. He says he has fully overcome that and has set his sights on taking Ghana to what he considers an even bigger achievement. “First we have to qualify for the Nations Cup and then do everything to win. I want it badly. We hear everyday how Ghana has won the African Cup four times but it did not happen in our generation. That has to change.
