Wembley Sports Construction Chief Executive Officer Robert Coleman has presented JoySports journalist Nathaniel Attoh with GHC 50,000 after he was named the 2026 Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Sports Journalist of the Year.
Coleman announced the award at the 30th GJA Awards ceremony in Accra on Saturday, November 7, honouring Attoh’s contribution to sports journalism.
Attoh, widely known as Citizen Attoh, won the award ahead of Media General’s Bill Eshun. His success was linked to his documentary, The Audacious Leap, which was broadcast on JoyNews on May 19, 2025.
The documentary follows the story of Ghanaian para-athlete Gilbert Ampiah and his efforts to overcome physical challenges while pursuing a career in athletics.
When the documentary was produced, Ampiah was a 16-year-old student at St Augustine’s College in Cape Coast. Despite being born with a leg deformity, he had made significant progress in the high jump.
Attoh travelled to the school to document Ampiah’s development, interviewing people who had supported the teenager’s journey. They included his father, teachers, trainers and colleagues.
Ampiah has since emerged as one of Ghana’s promising junior para-athletes and is aiming to compete at the highest level internationally.
His performances in training before the 2025 inter-schools competition drew considerable attention on social media, helping to raise his profile and highlight his determination.
In 2023, Ampiah cleared 1.60 metres at Ekumfi Atwa while competing against able-bodied athletes. He later recorded a personal best of 1.82 metres during the inter-house competition at St Augustine’s College.
He has also made progress in international competition. Ampiah won bronze in the High Jump T44 category at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan International Para Athletics Meeting in Marrakech, Morocco.
The athlete secured his first international medal by clearing 1.73 metres.
Attoh’s victory means JoySports has continued its strong record at the GJA Awards. He is the third successive winner of the Sports Journalist of the Year award from the Multimedia Group’s sports desk.
He follows Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, who won the honour in both 2024 and 2025.
